Zitat:Spam Preventer
Spam Preventer is a configurable anti-spam plugin for MyBB 1.8.x. It helps protect forums from common new-member and low-trust-member spam without unnecessarily restricting established members.
Rules can be limited to selected usergroups, such as a New-Member or probation group. Members stop being filtered after meeting the configured trust requirements or leaving the restricted group.
Features
- Apply protection only to selected usergroups.
- Use post count and account age to determine when members become trusted.
- Detect HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, www, bare-domain, MyCode, hxxp, and common [dot] link formats.
- Allow configured trusted domains and their subdomains.
- Block configured case-insensitive spam phrases.
- Prevent quote-only replies from restricted members.
- Choose separate actions for links, phrases, and quote-only replies.
- Log, reject, moderate, or ban depending on the selected action.
- Display clear validation errors without clearing the submitted message.
- Display Quick Reply errors above the form.
- Review detected activity in a dedicated Admin CP log viewer.
- Optionally detect rapid new-thread creation and apply a temporary cooldown.
- Exempt selected usergroups, users, or forums.
- Recognize primary and additional usergroup memberships.
- Automatically exempt administrators and moderators of the current forum.
- Optionally apply attachment size, extension, and rolling upload limits.
- Perform server-side validation through MyBB’s data handlers.
Installation
Upload the contents of the included Upload directory into the root of your MyBB installation.
Then open:
Admin CP → Configuration → Plugins
Find Spam Preventer and select Install & Activate.
The plugin creates its settings under:
Admin CP → Configuration → Settings → Spam Preventer
Quick Start
1. Select the restricted usergroups
Set Eligibility: Restricted Usergroup IDs to the groups Spam Preventer should monitor.
MyBB’s default Registered group is ID 2. For better control, consider creating a dedicated New-Member group and entering that group’s ID instead.
Multiple group IDs may be entered as a comma-separated list.
2. Configure the trust requirements
The default requirements are:
- At least 25 posts
- An account at least 3 days old
A member in a restricted group remains subject to Spam Preventer while either requirement has not been met. The member becomes exempt after meeting both requirements.
Set either requirement to 0 to disable that individual condition.
Recommended Group Promotion Setup
For best results, place new registrations in a dedicated New-Member group and configure Spam Preventer to monitor that group.
Then create a MyBB group promotion under:
Admin CP → Users & Groups → Group Promotions → Add New Promotion
Example promotion:
- Original Usergroup: New-Member
- New Usergroup: Member
- Post Count: Greater than or equal to 25
- Time Registered: Greater than or equal to 3 days
- Promotion Type: Primary Usergroup
Spam Preventer protects the account while it remains in the New-Member group. MyBB moves the account into the normal Member group after the promotion requirements are met.
Group promotions are processed through MyBB’s scheduled task system, so a qualifying member may not be promoted immediately.
Protection Rules
Spam Preventer includes the following primary protections:
- External Links: detects links that are not included in the trusted-domain list.
- Spam Phrases: detects configured phrases in thread subjects and messages.
- Quote-Only Replies: requires meaningful original text outside complete MyBB quote blocks.
- Rapid Threads: optionally limits how many threads a restricted member may create during a rolling period.
External-link, spam-phrase, and quote-only rules each support these actions:
- Log only: record the match and allow the submission.
- Reject submission: block the submission and display an error.
- Send to moderation queue: save the submission as unapproved for staff review.
- Ban user and reject: move the member into the configured banned group and block the submission.
Trusted Domains
Enter one trusted domain per line without a protocol or path.
Example:
Subdomains are trusted automatically. Adding sickgaming.net also trusts addresses such as cdn.sickgaming.net.Code:sickgaming.net github.com *.edu *.gov
A leading wildcard trusts an entire suffix. For example, *.edu allows both mit.edu and engineering.mit.edu.
Blocked Phrases
Enter one case-insensitive plain-text phrase per line.
Blank lines and lines beginning with # are ignored.
Example:
A starter phrase list is included in default-blocked-phrases.txt.Code:# Recurring coupon spam shein coupon code coupon code for new users
Exemptions
Spam Preventer can exempt:
- Selected usergroups
- Individual user IDs
- Specific forum IDs
Usergroup exemptions recognize both primary and additional group memberships. This allows trusted secondary groups such as VIP, donor, or booster groups to bypass restrictions.
Administrators and moderators of the current forum are exempt automatically.
Spam Preventer Logs
Administrators with the appropriate permission can review detected activity under:
Admin CP → Tools & Maintenance → Logs → Spam Preventer Logs
Logs can be filtered by user, forum, rule, action, and date. Administrators may view individual records, delete selected records, or prune old records.
Deleting log records does not modify users, posts, threads, warnings, or cooldowns.
Optional Attachment Protection
Version 1.1.3 adds optional per-group and per-user attachment policies.
Attachment policies are disabled by default.
When enabled, they can control:
- Maximum size of one attachment
- Maximum uploaded bytes during a rolling 24-hour period
- Maximum attachment count during a rolling 24-hour period
- Allowed attachment extensions
- Per-user policy overrides
These settings complement MyBB’s existing attachment permissions and quotas. They do not enable attachment types that MyBB has disabled globally.
Detailed policy syntax and examples are included in the project README. Test attachment policies before enabling them on a live forum.
Recommended First Test
Use a non-staff account belonging to a configured restricted group and test:
- A normal text post
- A trusted link
- An untrusted external link
- A configured blocked phrase
- A quote-only reply
- Quick Reply validation
- Your selected moderation actions
Staff accounts should not be used for testing because administrators and forum moderators are exempt automatically.
Upgrading
To upgrade an existing installation:
- Replace the existing files with the files from the new Upload directory.
- Deactivate Spam Preventer.
- Reactivate Spam Preventer.
Do not uninstall the plugin during a normal upgrade. Uninstalling removes saved Spam Preventer settings, logs, cooldowns, and attachment-ledger data.
Activation refreshes the plugin’s settings while preserving existing values and logs.
Thread-post warning notices are now provided by the separate Staff Tools plugin. Reactivating Spam Preventer 1.1.3 removes its obsolete warning-notice setting and template without changing any MyBB warning records.
